MANILA, Philippines – Nintendo on Thursday evening, January 16, published the first-look trailer for its highly anticipated new console, the Switch 2, the follow up to the hit Nintendo Switch console, which has sold over 140 million units worldwide.

The new console will be available in 2025. An official website has also been put up for it.

The Nintendo Switch 2 will have some form of backwards compatibility, but Nintendo warns that “certain Nintendo Switch games may not be supported on or fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2.” Formerly, the Switch 2 was teased with backwards compatibility, but today’s announcement hints there might be some limits to it.

The Switch 2, based on the trailer, offers a similar lineup of configurations as the first Switch. It has detachable controllers, with the controllers being predominantly black now, with the trademark blue and red colors being more of an accent. The detachable controllers can be attached to a full-sized controller interface, and will also be able to attach to a dock.

At least according to the trailer, the Switch 2 appears to be bigger than the first Switch, pictured below on the left, but it’s unclear if the pictures are indeed to scale.

More details will be announced on April 2 via a “Nintendo Direct: Nintendo Switch 2 – 4.2.2025” livestream.

Starting in April, Nintendo will also be hosting hands-on experience sessions for those with a Nintendo account. The dates are as follows:
