MANILA, Philippines – UAAP Season 87 will kick off in a nostalgic way as iconic Filipino rock band The Eraserheads will reunite once again to perform at the Araneta Coliseum on September 7.
Featuring the quartet of Ely Buendia, Raimund Marasigan, Buddy Zabala, and Marcus Adoro, alumni of Season 87 host UP, the band is expected to perform some of its biggest hits, which captivated generations of Filipino music fans.
“We’re happy that the Eraserheads are going to share their magic with the UAAP as we start Season 87,” said UP Office for Athletics and Sports Development chief Bo Perasol, adding the band’s appearance is apt for the season theme of “Stronger. Better. Together.”
“They reached the top, disbanded, reunited, and now, they will have a full circle moment in their homecoming in UP, and the UAAP.”
“They are true music icons and legends and national pride.”
Just over a week ago, the four were feted with UP’s highest distinction — the Gawad Oblation Award — for significant contributions and extraordinary service.
The grand opening ceremony will have separate tickets from the Battle of Katipunan between the UP Fighting Maroons and the rebuilding Ateneo Blue Eagles.
A source close to the situation said that there is a possibility of three games being held on September 8, also at the Big Dome.
In the two-week buildup towards the season, the eight member schools will hold their respective pep rallies, which will be kicked off by the Maroons visiting the seven member schools with a torch relay.
The torch relay will have a modern twist, as UP will gift each school with an LED-lit torch, which is meant to be on display throughout the UAAP season.
All schools are also invited to interpet the theme through a large canvas called “The Unity Wall,” which will be exhibited in the schools at various points throughout the year.
UE will have its pep rally on August 28, followed by Ateneo and FEU on August 30, NU and UP on September 3, La Salle and UST on September 4, and Adamson on September 5.
