MANILA, Philippines – Mountain Province State Polytechnic College (MPSPC), the only public higher learning institution in the province, has been converted into a state university.

The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) formally approved the conversion of MPSPC into Mountain Province State University (MPSU) on Tuesday, August 27.

The law mandating MPSPC’s conversion, Republic Act No. 12016, had been signed by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on August 1.

“MPSPC has met and complied with the CHED standards for conversion to a state university as required by the law based on the evaluation and validation of the CHED Composite Team,” the commission said in a statement on Wednesday, August 28.

CHED evaluated the college’s “enrollment, programs, faculty, research, learning resources and support structures, linkages, and outreach programs.”

MPSPC has around 5,000 students per semester. It offers 23 undergraduate and six graduate programs, according to CHED.

CHED Chairman Prospero de Vera III noted that university status is granted only to “deserving higher educational institutions in the country that have proven their excellence in instruction, research, and extension.”

MPSPC’s own bid was 15 years in the making.

As MPSPC President Edgar Cue said, the achievement “comes after a long journey, beginning with the filing of the first bill in Congress in 2009.”

“The process was extensive due to the rigorous quality assurance requirements set by CHED, all of which we have diligently met,” he added.

Cue pledged that as MPSU, the school would “intensify [its] focus on research” and “pursue excellence on a global stage.” – Rappler.com
